Domestic Relationships Agreement for De Facto and Same-Sex Couples
|
From 1 December 2008 same sex and unmarried couples can register their relationships under the Relationships Act 2008.
What you need to know:
- Defacto heterosexual and same sex couples now have formal recognition of their relationship
- Application to the register is $180.00
- Additional fee is charged for a formal registration certificate
- The register is open to couples living in Victoria aged 18 years and over
- The register makes it easier for couples to access their rights under Victorian law
- The register provides certainty to couples’ legal obligations
- The register acts as proof that a couple is in a committed partnership
- The register operates through Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages
In light of these reforms Draftdocs has developed a Domestic
Relationships Agreement which you can order under the “Family and
Domestic Relationships” category.
Advantages of such an Agreement:
- It defines your financial rights and responsibilities towards each other in case of relationship breakdown or death
- It helps you eliminate conflicts in case of separation
- In the event of death it helps avoid litigation with the members of your individual extended families
- It governs any financial inter-dependence between you
